About your role

The Camera Engineering Manager leads the end-to-end development of smartphone camera systems, covering both hardware architecture and software/image processing domains.
This role is responsible for defining camera system strategy, driving technical execution, and ensuring seamless integration across optics, mechanics, electronics, and software. From early concept and design lock to validation and mass production, the role ensures delivery of a high-quality, differentiated camera experience aligned with product, timeline, and cost objectives.
The position works closely with cross-functional internal teams and external partners (ODM, module integrators, and suppliers), with strong ownership over decision-making, risk management, and image quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities & Objectives

Key responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team across optics, mechanical, electrical, system, and software/tuning domains
  • Take full ownership from concept definition, design lock, EVT/DVT/PVT to mass production
  • Convert product and user requirements into clear technical specifications, plans, and deliverables
  • Evaluate and benchmark 3rd-party imaging SDKs (e.g., Night Mode, HDR, Bokeh) and provide technical recommendations based on the trade-offs between image quality, power consumption, and processing latency for product alignment
  • Act as the central interface across Product, PMO, Engineering, and ODM, ensuring alignment and timely decisions
  • Define structured workflows, milestone tracking, and proactive risk identification and mitigation
  • Lead architecture decisions covering sensor, lens, actuator, and module integration within system constraints
  • Define ERS (Engineering Requirement Specification), validation plans, reliability strategy, and ensure robust calibration for mass production
  • Oversee ISP tuning, 3A performance, and ensure alignment between hardware capabilities and software outcomes
  • Manage key suppliers and ODM partners to ensure design feasibility, manufacturability, and quality delivery
  • Balance image quality, system constraints, cost, and supply chain risks, providing clear technical recommendations
Key objectives:
  • Deliver a competitive and differentiated smartphone camera experience (image quality + features)
  • Ensure successful execution of camera development across EVT / DVT / PVT to mass production
  • Establish clear camera system architecture and technical roadmap aligned with product strategy
  • Achieve stable mass production quality (yield, calibration consistency, field performance)
  • Balance performance, cost, power, thermal, and mechanical constraints in camera design
  • Build strong collaboration with ODM and key component suppliers

Your Skills & Experience

Must-have
  • Strong experience in smartphone camera system development (hardware + software integration)
  • Deep understanding of ISP pipeline and image quality tuning (3A, NR, CCM, etc.)
  • Familiarity with DXOMARK testing protocols and its objective lab evaluation tools
  • Experience with Android camera framework (Camera HAL3)
  • Proven experience working with ODM and camera module suppliers
  • Strong cross-functional leadership and project management skills
  • Ability to drive technical decisions under ambiguity and constraints
Nice-to-have
  • Experience with Qualcomm or similar mobile platforms
  • Knowledge of computational photography / AI imaging algorithms
  • Experience with multi-camera systems and advanced features (HDR fusion, depth, video stabilization)
  • Familiarity with factory calibration and mass production processes
  • Experience in sustainability-driven product design (e.g., repairability considerations)

What Fairphone can offer you?
