About your role
The Procurement Manager will play a critical role in delivering Fairphone’s strategic procurement objectives. You will be expected to understand the business and product needs and translate that to supplier search and meeting supplier delivery based on these needs on proposition and cost price. In addition to managing key procurement categories, the role is instrumental in supporting a healthy P&L by ensuring cost-effective sourcing and delivering the right value for money across current goods and services.

This person is also responsible for relationship management with the supplier and for gathering and analyzing robust market intelligence, with a particular focus on the phone industry, to inform negotiation strategies and sourcing decisions. You will translate market trends regarding phones and sub-components into actionable goals for the business. Furthermore, you will work on value engineering ideas for phones at the factory level and drive process improvements.
Key Responsibilities & Objectives
  • Lifecycle & Supplier Management: Manage lifecycle changes of current phones in the market and lead the sub-supplier selection process alongside ODM Program Managers and cross-functional teams.
  • Market Intelligence: Gather accurate market knowledge on pricing and trends for sub-suppliers (e.g., memory, battery, display) to ensure supply availability at a competitive price and manage risks.
  • Sourcing strategy: Responsible for supplier selection, stakeholder alignment across the company, and managing sourcing activities for accessories like chargers and cables, as well as sub-supplier selection for phones. Negotiate prices with sub-suppliers on components and raw material to achieve business needs.. Responsible for continuous supply risk analysis and 2nd source introduction.
  • Value Engineering: Lead value engineering initiatives by collaborating with cross-functional teams and suppliers to reduce costs while maintaining or enhancing functionality. This includes performing gemba walks together with the Operations teams to identify areas for improvement.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Periodically share key market trends and intelligence regarding sub-suppliers with the wider team.
  • Contract Management: Act as the owner of contracts, working closely with legal and cross-functional teams to ensure strong, robust contracts are in place against suppliers.
  • Supplier development: Contribute to the Supplier Developer Program in partnership with Operations Asia and Quality Management teams.
Your Skills & Experience
  • Industry Background: You have a minimum of 7 years of experience within Procurement in consumer goods (FMCG, electronics, etc.) and at least 5 years of proven experience specifically within the Phone industry. Ideally, you have worked as a buyer in phone companies or ODM companies.
  • Technical Knowledge: You have a clear understanding of market trends for phones and sub-components (memory, battery, display, etc.) and proven experience understanding costed BOMs. Experience in cost analysis of mechanical parts (tooling, Injection, CNC and finishing). Experience with recycled materials (PCR plastic), fair materials is a plus.
  • Value Engineering: You have proven experience in value engineering focused on cost down initiatives, including practical experience with gemba and factory walks.
  • Core Skills: You have experience in account management with suppliers and experience in sourcing within New Product Introductions (NPI). Skills on pulling in materials delivery schedule to meet urgent production requirements. Experience in price negotiation and reduction with top global suppliers.
  • Communication: You have proven written and verbal communication skills in Mandarin and English.
  • Tools: Experience working with dashboards like Power BI or Google Looker Studio is a plus.
